Nothing to Wear: Be My Stylist

This weekend my sister came to visit me, and as often happens when she comes to visit, she and I went into my closet and determined that all my clothes suck.

Fine, they don't actually suck. As far as a viable everyday wardrobe, I've been very careful this year to be intentional about the pieces I buy to make sure they're versatile. I think I've done a pretty good job; this girl can work at home comfortably and still have enough nice pieces to be able to go to a business lunch or networking event and not look like a twelve year old.

But my sister pointed out one flaw: all of my clothes are either casual or business-y. I have no "dressy" clothes. And, as she pointed out to me, Thanksgiving and Christmas are mere weeks away, and I have nothing to wear to them.

So I bought two new skirts. I've actually had "black pencil skirt" and "black non-pencil skirt" on my Clothes I Need list for a long time, so both of these were pretty good purchases.

Left: Target ($16.99). It says on the website that it's a mini skirt, but it's really knee-length (at least on me; I'm 5'3"). It's also not real pleather. The website says it's not available in stores, but it totally is. Basically the website is completely wrong. And the skirt is cuter in person.
Right: Maurice's ($32). Their website is accurate.

Normally when I go shopping, I try to think of five different ways I can style each piece before I make the decision to buy it. But I kind of jumped the gun in my haste to find cute skirts, and now I'm not sure what I should wear with these other than a white button-down or black turtleneck (because I'm EXCITING). Between Christmas and Thanksgiving and non-family Christmas parties, I've got at least seven different events to attend. (I suppose I don't have to wear the same two skirts for all of them, but I'm lacking ideas right now.)

How would you style these skirts? What do you plan to wear for various holidays? Is it too early for me to be worrying about this?

  1. I honestly think you can do a ton with both! I'd keep the tops relatively simple. I think any solid-colored (or color-blocked) top -- tee, blouse, tank-- would work with the pencil skirt (plus a statement necklace!)

As for the sequin one, I think you could also wear any solid-colored top, or pair it with a blazer or cardigan to add some extra layers/textures without it getting hyper-dressy.

    1. Ooh, I like the idea of adding a blazer or something to the second skirt to either dress it up or down. Maybe with tights too!

  2. I agree with Jill. I love the non-pencil skirt, and I think it would pair very nicely with any jewel tones for the top, with a nice cardigan.Color is everywhere and I'm sure you could play around with it, and black and white are also a good fall back if you need it.

    1. I agree, white and black are my total fall-back colors. I love jewel tones and only have like, purple tops and sweaters! Might need to do a little more shopping.

  3. I dresss pretty "boring" too sometimes, so i try to mix it up with my basics. A solid colored cardigan, a flowy shirt, statement necklace (not always altogether!).

Oh, and tuck tuck tuck! Seriously the only advice I'd give anyone about pencil skirts. Makes you look lots fancier, even if you're wearing a printed v-neck with it :)

    1. So true! Skirts almost always look better with the top tucked in!
