Someday Maybe I'll Be Able to Play Keytar

Remember that time I tried to teach myself how to play the piano, and then I gave up when I couldn't figure out bass clef so I stopped practicing? Well, I'm at it again.

I've mentioned before that Matt is the drummer in our church's worship band. And unfortunately, almost every single member of the band either graduated in May or is moving this summer. So, in a stroke of brilliance, the worship leader decided to offer free guitar and piano lessons to the congregants, in the hopes of getting people more interested in joining the band.

I really only intended to take the piano lessons, but since the two classes were back to back, and I couldn't remember which one started first, I got roped into playing guitar too. (Not totally weird; when I was a kid, I wanted to be a country singer when I grew up, so my parents got me a guitar for Christmas one year. I never figured out how to play anything but a D chord, and I'm pretty sure the guitar wound up at my sister's house.)

And now I know why people take lessons when they're trying to learn something new, instead of just striking out on their own. Because it really is more helpful to have someone who knows what they're doing correct you, so your hands are in the right positions and you're holding the pick the proper way. I wasn't sure at first how the classes would go, because they were only 30 minutes long apiece, and several people showed up for each lesson. But there were plenty of guitars to go around, and we just each took a section of the two keyboards available to practice.

I don't know if it will stick or not this time. But you can't beat free.

Have you ever taken music lessons?

  1. I was a music minor, so I took lessons in piano, but my main instrument is voice. I have difficulty with my hand-eye coordination, but I'm glad I learned enough to pound out my parts when I'm practicing at home. I really wish I could be better at it, though.

  2. I've always wanted to learn piano, it's such a beautiful and versatile instrument! I tried briefly in college with my roommate, but I have no musical ability.
