I Am Paint-Challenged

This is not a real post. It's basically just me begging for advice.

I see plenty of you ladies doing gorgeous home decorating stuff; painting furniture finds, spray-painting tchotchkes to bring new life to them, using all different sorts of paint to make all different sorts of things pretty. I am totally in awe of you.

Every time I paint something, it turns out sticky. Like, days after I'm done painting, it'll be sticky. I'm always afraid of ruining the paint job or ruining whatever I'm eventually going to put on the painted surface.

I have a post coming up about how we painted our laminate countertops (with paint specifically meant for laminate countertops!). The paint was supposed to be dry and usable within three days. It's been five days, and the counter is still sticky.

I always wait the amount of time the paint can recommends before re-coating or finishing, and I use sealant where applicable. I try to do my research to make sure I'm using the correct type of paint for any given project.

Admittedly, I'm in Texas and it's humid here, but some of my favorite home-decor bloggers are also in Texas and don't seem to have these problems!

What am I doing wrong??

  1. I'll be interested to see the tips on this one! We had a battle with spray painting a vanity and we ended up buying 6 cans for that one project. I know I want to paint other things in the future and hope not to have so much waste.

  2. Another Texan interested in seeing responses as I'm getting ready to re-do my kitchen which includes sanding down my current cabinets to repaint them.

  3. Hmm...my only thought would be that if you are leaving it outside and/or painting it in the middle of the afternoon, it's gonna take a long longer because of the heat/humidity. I don't know other than, that though! So strange - I'll let you know if I think of anything!

    1. My most recent project I did paint in the mid-afternoon, but it was also indoors ... haha. Maybe I just need to do my paint projects earlier or later in the day!
