I Don't Like Having Regrets

In December, an old friend called me after dinner one evening. Matt was playing a video game online with a friend from high school, I was all cozy in my pajamas with a cup of hot chocolate. She asked if I wanted to go out to a Christmas thing with her and her fiancé, and I looked down at my jammies and my mug, and decided I'd rather stay in. I justified it by thinking to myself that the event was a little pricier than I would want to pay for a night out, especially since money was a little tight this fall.

I regretted saying no almost as soon as I'd hung up the phone. It's been over a month now, and I still regret saying no to her. I don't get to see either of them often enough, so why on earth would I have said no?

There are some times when the draw of staying in, sitting next to a space heater and doing nothing productive sounds ideal, even to this extrovert. But when it comes at the expense of experiencing the real world, seeing friends ... I don't know if it's worth it. I wished that I could try harder to say yes, even if I didn't necessarily want to go out.

So I made a bigger effort. And I won a super cozy fuzzy blanket, thanks to a networking thing at the new Sleep Number store in town.

And I got to strut my stuff on the runway in a fabulous pair of new, previously-unworn shoes.

And I made some new friends.

And I had fabulous Indian food and weird habañero wine at a birthday party. (Both were kind of spicy.)

And I went to another social at Painting With a Twist and won this crazy zebra pillow as a door prize. (Apparently January was a good month for winning things, and also maybe this is the universe telling me I should spend more time on the couch?)

But I'm not going to let that icky regretfulness set up camp again.

What did you say "yes" to this month? What do you need to say "yes" to?

  1. Ohhh that throw looks so soft and fuzzy! I love it! Since my husband works at home, I am unemployed and we just moved to a place where we know absolutely no one we've definitely had to make a conscious effort to get ourselves out of the house. On Saturday a couple we recently met invited us out last minute. It was so tempting to just say no and continue watching Netflix all night, but it's not healthy for either of us to sit in like that every night. I'm so glad we said yes, we had a great time and met a few new people as well!

  3. I've always believed you'll regret the things you don't do rather than the things you do, but sometimes it can be so hard...like when it's cold and snowy outside :)

  4. i've always tried to say 'yes' when i'm torn to prevent regrets, but lately i've been swinging the other way, and kind of giving myself to permission to say 'no.' i think i need to find a nice compromise :)

  5. I have the same problem. Sometime I just don't want to make the effort to get ready and go out, but I wonder if I'll regret it. Then again... sometimes I HAVE gone out and regretted that too, so it's hard to tell which is worse. But I do think I try to say yes to things I have an interest in. Next time, you'll know to say yes! :)
