Vignettes

I had an epiphany the other day. Over the last few weeks, I have been absolutely itching to get out of town, go do something new, see something different. Adventure, I need adventure! But it didn't happen, and this week, I felt so tired that I was content to stay home and relax at the end of the day. That's when adventure found me.

But in trying to describe it, I realized that maybe some of the best adventures aren't ones that can be described, at least not in a compelling way. Because from the outside, maybe not all adventures are that noteworthy or exciting. But sometimes having friends show up at your door unannounced, the lure of not knowing where you're going, having no plans and the promise of ice cream, those are sometimes the best adventures. Even if it doesn't involve leaving town or doing something totally new.

When I was in high school, I used to show up at friend's houses unannounced all the time. Never during dinner time, and usually bearing some kind of gift; I liked the spontaneity of it. The idea that friends could be home and ready to go do something, or even that they wouldn't be home, because they were already out on their own adventures. I don't know why I stopped doing that, but it happened way less in college, and finally I just stopped altogether.

It became a lot harder to drop in on people unexpectedly once all our friends started having kids.

Matt and I went to Sonic the other day. He really wanted a snow cone, but the place was already closed, and so we hit our second choice. Matt asked if I remembered the summer after high school, when a whole bunch of us would go to one particular Sonic in our hometown every Wednesday night, just to hang out before we all scattered. Of course I remembered. I don't remember particulars, but I remember the people that were always there. I'm not often nostalgic about high school, but that made me think about those friends I haven't talked to in years. Because sometimes you just lose touch and it's hard to pick up again where you left off.

What's been on your mind this week?

  1. I was thinking about the showing up at other people's houses thing the other day too, I miss being able to do that.
