Everything I Know About Music I Learned From Advertising

The TV is my favorite source for new music. I hear songs in commercials, and decide that I love them based on the 30-seconds-or-less snippet that the ad contains. This happens fairly regularly. The first time I ever heard Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix's "1901" was during a car commercial. I fell in love with "Stuttering" during a Dentyne commercial. I discovered Rogue Wave thanks to a phone ad.

A while back I downloaded an app on my phone so that whenever I heard the quick bits of these songs, I could identify who the artist was so I didn't lose it forever. Before smartphones, I searched YouTube for the ads, since the videos usually disclosed what song was playing.

So as my DVR started playing last night's Colbert Report, a Cigna commercial was half-over. But those 10 seconds were all I needed to get hooked on Joy Zipper.

(P.S. How on earth do people name their bands? Just pick two random words that don't go together? I don't get it. If I ever start a band, it's going to be called Glass Stapler. Or Paperback Acoustics. Or Ballpoint Cat.)

What are you listening to today?

  1. I've caught onto a couple of new songs or groups from commercials, like that one with Neon Trees..."it started with a whisper" as the lady is getting into her car. Took us a second, but finally found out who they were and the name of the song (Everybody Talks).

  2. Willie Nelson did a cover of Coldplay's "The Scientist" on a Chipotle commercial. Otherwise, I would have never known.

  4. haha, I do the same thing. I love songs from commercials. Apple usually has some good ones. My most recent one that I had to have was "too close" by Alex Clare, it was on an internet explorer commercial, lol.

  5. I also love songs from the TV commercials. But, I suggest that you take a look also for the music hit charts, music channels, radio stations etc. so you will be updated on the latest songs for today.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion! I actually do listen to the radio in my car (when I'm not listening to audiobooks), but I generally stick to mainstream stuff, and I like how commercials bring me out of that!
