I don't really like Christmas music. I get annoyed with it really easily. I finally switched my car radio over to the Christmas station ... on Tuesday. I finally allowed my Pandora Christmas channel to mix in with all the other ones yesterday. I can really only tolerate about a week (or two, tops) of Christmas music every year. Even if I haven't heard any of the songs in 11 months, I get annoyed just thinking about hearing the same 10 songs on repeat all season.
(Of course there are a few I love, and which I will never tire of. "O Come Emmanuel." The Hippopotamus Song. "Carol of the Bells." Anything Trans-Siberian Orchestra does. "Christmas Is All Around" from Love Actually. All the music in The Nutcracker. When Matt gets really excited about the Chipmunk Song.)
But ones that make me stabby? Most versions of "Santa Baby." "Christmas Shoes." Any version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" in which the male vocalist sounds like a creeper. (So, most of them.) Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" IS THE WORST. That song literally makes me want to find a cliff and fling myself over it.
But! I have found a new Christmas song this year that I actually LIKE. As in, have willingly listened to it multiple times over the last two days. I heard it on the radio and immediately recognized the voice of the guy from Owl City, and it wasn't too hard to find the song after that. I like the music, the message, even the rapping in the middle. Because I can get behind rapping when it's about buying winter coats for kids and sledding, and not like, Eminem threatening to set Rihanna on fire.
Anyway, I will not be posting next week, because Christmas. But I hope everyone has a good holiday and safe travels!
What are your favorite (or least favorite) Christmas songs?
After six holiday seasons working retail, I have a huge list of Christmas songs I can't stand. My favorite to hate is "One Christmas Catalogue" by Captain Sensible. So. Much. Hate. My favorite album is Alabama Christmas, we listened to it all the time growing up, so it makes me super nostalgic.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's easy to get sick of them so fast, especially since they start popping up on Thanksgiving. I can't stand "Do They Know It's Christmas Time," which is the most depressing song and I once heard it while eating a burger at Dairy Queen. I just wanted to cry. I do like "Christmas Wrapping," about the girl spending Christmas by herself, but she finally bumps into the guy she's been chasing all year. It's very 80s, but cute.
ReplyDeleteI just recently discovered Sufjan Stevens' holiday Pandora playlist... my favorite one so far! There's a lot of Christmas songs I've never heard before that he does. I also tire of traditional Christmas music sometimes... have to be in the right mood for it. (p.s. see you tomorrow!)
ReplyDeletelistening to your christmas song now- it's definitely making it into the holiday song rotation :) hope you're enjoying a wonderful holiday!
