I Ain't Workin' On My Fitness

I have a confession to make. I never ever ever exercise.

I mean, I take a tap class once a week. But that is just for fun and not for exercise. So I guess it counts, but not really.

Oh, and occasionally Matt and I will go for walks around the neighborhood. I say that's exercise, but he says it's not, so I don't know where to land on that one.

But I can count on one finger the number of times I've gone running since March 2011. And I can't count the number of months I paid for a gym membership before I finally admitted to myself that I was probably never going to go, and canceled the thing.


Even Elliott doesn't mind spending time in the gym (bag).

But lately I've been having a harder time zipping up my pants, and I need to do something to make them fit again. So I figure it's time to maybe do something more exercise-like? But I really hate running; I wasn't cut out to be a runner. I like being active and doing things that don't really feel like exercising. If I had a bike, I'd like going on bike rides. And I used to like doing Pilates.

I looked around the house to see what I could maybe do on my own without spending any money, and what I found was: Wii Fit, a jump rope, and 3, 5 and 8-pound free weights. Oh, and a yoga mat.

I could probably do some kind of cardio or something at home or outside so I don't die of heart disease. It's just figuring out what to do and keeping up the stamina to do it regularly! Which is why I decided to write about it. To hold myself accountable. And so that you can berate me if I tell you I only managed to work out one time this month.

What do you do for exercise? Any ideas for things to do that don't require a gym membership? And how do you make yourself stay on track?

  1. I've been using the app on my phone "My Fitness Pal" where you can enter whatever you eat and exercie and help lose weight. You can connect with friends/family on it to help support you. In two months I've lost 10 lbs.

  2. I hate running and "normal" cardio. But I try to make myself do it. I really liked Jillian Michaels' Yoga Meltdown video. It's yoga with some strength training built in, and it's a lot tamer than her Ripped in 30 and 30-Day Shred programs.

    1. I was always so intimidated by the idea of 30-day Shred that I never even tried it! I'm going to add that to my Netflix queue and give it a try!

  3. I plan on doing a plank a day when life settles down. That about all I can manage.

  4. My mom and I did the 6 week Shred Diet, and have incorporated the exercise and some eating habits into our day to day life since we finished it. I walk or jog 1-2 times a day (once by myself and once with my mom after work), 5-7 times a week. The walking may not seem like much (30-45 mins a walk), but I really enjoy them as they give me a break from work, time to listen to music and think about life.

  5. I have to go to classes, or else I'm not motivated to do it on my own. My dogs help to an extent, but walking is only getting me so far (and I hate running too!). Tonight I start a boot camp class with a friend and I also enjoy Zumba classes. I hope you find something that works for you!

    1. I'm kind of the same way. If I have a class to go to every week, then I'm much more likely to go! That's why dance classes have worked so well for me before, but we can't really afford for me to take multiple classes a week right now.

  7. I hate running toO! Lately I've really seen t he need for more fitness-esque stuff. Right around my wedding, I got really into Pop Pilates on Youtube--it's fun and free and you can do it at home! I have to get back into it but it really worked for me.
